Few items bring out the warmth and beauty of a home like rustic hardwood flooring. Often it is an inexpensive way to help increase the value of many older and newer homes. It typically does not take a lot of time or much carpentry skill. Depending on what wood you plan to use as your floor it generally will not take many special tools either.
Typically one of the first items anybody should do will be getting the wood flooring they picked out to install. Shop around if you can, to compare prices and never get the first thing you see. When you get it home, carefully stack them inside a room for storage close to where it will be installed. This will help give it time for acclimation to your home's temperature or humidity conditions.
While you are waiting for your wood to acclimate, move everything out of the room you will be working in and clean it up. If your going to install a plywood sub-floor now is the time to do it. Typically 3/4 inch plywood works the best. Now is also a good time to put down a vapor barrier and felt. Try to overlap both at least 4 inches on the seams if possible.
Now is time for the actual installation, go to the longest wall that is in your room. Snap a nice chalk line around 3/8 inch from the bottom of the wall. This lets the wood floor wood contract or expand over the winter and summer months. Make the mark dark so it can not get rubbed off while you work.
Find a long straight board and line it up with the chalk line you just made. Drill pilot holes in it 8 inches apart and secure it to the floor. Do not forget to put plugs in the screw holes to cover them up. Finish your first board by face nailing the tung in 10 inch increments down the length of the board. Repeat until your first row is completed.
Remember to always use a random length with your boards so none of the seam points line up. Start your second row by inserting the grove inside the tung of your first row. Face nail your second row through its tung and begin on the third row.
Continue till you reach the opposite side of the room. As you reach the opposite side, cut your boards to fit nice. Make sure you try to nail down into the floor joists. When doing the threshold, go all the way through it with flooring. Return after you are done with a cut off saw to trim the boards to fit.
Installing your
rustic hardwood flooring in your house is not really as difficult as it will be time consuming for you. Remember to measure the boards twice so you cut them once. If this seems overwhelming to try yourself, there are several reasonably priced contractors which could do it for you. Just contact them and you will be on your way to a new hardwood floor.
