Many people do not like change and may resist making the house more sound ecologically. This means they continue making poor decisions that have long term effects. Consider a few tips on how to make your home eco friendly that can also save you some money without making a lot of difference in habits.
Change to energy saving light bulbs and you will adjust quickly. These devices make a big difference in the electricity consumed in a home. LED lights are more expensive than other options but use the least amount of energy. Compact fluorescents replace incandescent bulbs and are affordable but use about one third of the energy.
Recycle - Reduce the amount of garbage going to the landfill from a house. A growing number of cities, of all sizes offer curbside recycling, making the process even easier. Consider recycling items such as plastic containers, metal cans and newspaper. Talk with credit reporting agencies to prevent preapproved credit offers and ask to be removed from mailing lists to reduce most junk mail. Choose reusable shopping bags to reduce the petroleum used to make plastic bags.
Install a water filter under the sink. It will cost what most people spend on bottled water in a year and reduces plastic bottles and fuel to transport water. As an added benefit, filtered water is available for cooking. Buy glass or other inert water bottles to use in the car and at work. This eliminates carcinogens from leaching into the water.
Stop using paper towels - Paper towels are difficult to recycle and should be avoided when possible. Consider buying some good bar wipes from a restaurant supply or tear old bath towels to an appropriate size. Add 1/4 cup of chlorine bleach to the wash when cleaning these rags to keep them looking and smelling clean. Some consumers are using Velcro or snaps on these towels so they can be rolled onto a dispenser and used when needed.
Limit air conditioning use. Air conditioning uses more energy than any other appliance in most homes. Turn the system off at night and open the window. Use a programmable thermostat to reduce cooling when away from home. When temperatures and humidity are elevated, keep windows closed in order to remain comfortable.
Be sure the house has sufficient insulation. It should meet any current recommendations by the federal standards. Older homes, built when R-values were lower can benefit from more insulation materials. Choose green products created from recycled newsprint that has been treated to reduce fire chances. The added insulation lowers the energy needed to heat or cool the house.
